GIFT GUIDE
Beyond the box: a gift with a second life
A Japanese wrapping cloth, a considered object, and one personal sentence. A quieter approach to a memorable gift.

A memorable gift need not be oversized or covered in branding. Our editorial starting point is the moment after it has been opened: what can the recipient use, understand, and enjoy? Furoshiki offers one practical answer. Japan’s Ministry of the Environment publishes wrapping methods for different objects, while Tokyo’s official feature describes the cloth’s long, adaptable life. The suggestions here are contemporary gift ideas, not universal rules of Japanese etiquette.
1. Choose the object before the wrapping
Think about a real part of the recipient’s day: a meal, a notebook, a cup of tea. Choose something that belongs there. Our preference is for one clear idea rather than several unrelated objects assembled to fill a box.
Size, care requirements, and the recipient’s existing possessions matter. An elegant object that asks for storage space or maintenance they do not want may not be the right gift.
2. Let the cloth work after the occasion
Furoshiki can wrap and carry different objects. Choose its dimensions and material for the item rather than assuming every cloth will fit. The Ministry of the Environment’s illustrated guide is a useful place to see several wrapping approaches.
A reusable cloth is an opportunity, not an automatic environmental guarantee. Its value comes from being used again. Pick a colour and texture the recipient might genuinely enjoy, and include the care instructions.
3. Add a sentence that only you could write
Explain why you thought of this person. A note about shared breakfasts or a new home can say more than a generic statement about luxury. Keep factual claims about the maker and origin consistent with the product information.
You do not need to invent a centuries-old meaning for a pattern. If you cannot verify a symbolic explanation, describe what you like about its colour or composition instead.
4. Keep the reveal separate from delivery protection
Decorative cloth is not a replacement for protective shipping materials. For fragile gifts, follow the seller or carrier’s packaging requirements. International delivery also calls for checking the destination, timing, final charges, and return conditions.
For a business gift, confirm the recipient organisation’s rules before ordering. Presentation should make receiving the gift easier, not create an obligation.
